DEVELOPMENT OF THE DECK
The Transparent Owl Tarot Deck came about after discovering an old Rider/Waite tarot deck in a cupboard of an abandoned house. My knowledge of tarot was limited to movies which usually showed some poor soul picking the Death or Tower card and then being doomed. This became the beginning of my own Fool’s Journey – I was going through a time of intense transition where I was drawing the Death and Tower cards almost every day! What I learned was that these cards meant transition and rebirth (not doom) and gave me the belief that not only would I survive, but that I would thrive in my new life. I found out that Tarot was a perfect blending of my artistic talents and art history background. Humans have always communicated through images – from ancient cave drawings, architecture, arts, alphabets and language, body decoration and body movement continuing to present day iPhones, computers and video games. Literally every interaction on earth and beyond is a common human language made up of images. We all have common life experiences which have been recorded through various creative outlets. Even the disciplines we call science and medicine are a combination of images and symbols that communicate thought processes. Think about blueprints, mathematical formulas and MRI’s for instance – all images that communicate information.
When I started studying the meanings and symbols which tell the Fool’s Journey, I became overwhelmed by the depth of history and knowledge contained in 78 cards. I also had a hard time finding references for artists and creatives – how can the cards be used in a creative context? How can they help artists with the creative process? If the Tarot is based on human image archetypes then where are the decks that access that creative collective? I knew there were artists that used the cards to create but I couldn’t find any decks specifically designed for creatives. In my attempt to organize this information in an inclusive, creative based way, I have spent two years researching and painting the Transparent Owl Tarot Deck. I am currently developing an online seminar and writing an accompanying book to summarize its symbols and meanings and explain how I use the cards as an intuitive tool to help discover mine and my clients’ most authentic creative souls. As busy modern day people, our creative souls are sometimes buried under the pressures of everyday responsibilities. With the internet and cell phones, we have instant access to an unlimited amount of information – we are bombarded with so many external images that we sometimes forget that we have our own internal source of creative magic. It is in our subconscious, imagination and dreams – all we have to do is unlock that source and it is available for us to become our own Sun & Star in whichever creative endeavor that calls to us.
As an artist I teach classes, do readings, build creative mentoring, develop workshops and create from my soul. I consider myself a Hexenmeister because of my Pennsylvania Dutch background. In essence a Hexenmeister is a person who heals by creating ‘image magic’ – ie. an artist. Originally from Peoria, Illinois, I have a BFA in Studio Art and a MA in Art History. I have been a professional artist most of my life and have shown and worked in galleries in Los Angeles, CA; Sedona, AZ; Santa Fe, NM and Cannon Beach, OR. I now live close to the ocean with my dog Smokey on the Long Beach Peninsula.
